I realize my last entry, posted all of ten minutes ago, centered on books, but I didn't want this to get lost in my rage.

My modern lit class is nothing but reading assignments, and since I've felt lost since finishing Middlesex (which I have a lot to say about at a later time), I am LOVING the syllabus.

I picked up the books I'd need and my mommy paid for them, so here's what I'll be working on until December:

  • Rapture by Susan Minot
  • Love Poem by Anne Sexton (my girl!)
  • The Short Stories by Ernest Hemingway
  • Ariel by Sylvia Plath
  • Rubaiyat by Nazim Hikmet
  • After Dark by Haruki Murakami
  • House of Meetings by Martin Amis
  • At the Bottom of the River by Jamaica Kincaid
  • On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan
  • Memoirs of a Muse by Lara Vapnyar

My first assignment is to read six of the Ernest Hemingway short stories. I love love love this class.

nerd crack is the best crack.

i don't know what your feelings are on atonement, but the same guy wrote on chesil beach. and i always recommend anne sexton (if you're into poetry) because she's amazing.

My professor seems really into them, and he's apparently not even a fan of novels, lol.

Heh, that is pretty amusing. I have had some wonderfully loopy professors over the years.

I was trying to edit my comment to say those are some "wonderful writers"! I enjoy many of those writers but there are several books on your syllabus that I haven't had a chance to read yet. My personal reading list is absurd!

Haruki Murakami!!! He is awesome. After Dark was not one of my faves- it felt too short to get anything done, but he is really really cool.
